Occupations in High Demand
On November 28, 2008, the Minister for Citizenship, Immigration, and Multiculturalism, Jason Kenney, announced measures to improve economic and labour market-based migration to Canada. The Action Plan for Faster Immigration includes issuing instructions to visa officers to process federal skilled worker applications for candidates who are in 38 high-demand occupations, have an offer of arranged employment, or have been living in Canada legally for at least one year as either a temporary foreign worker or international student.
The above mentioned criteria relate to the eligibility to apply; however, an applicant must still meet selection criteria. In its simplest form, your application to come to Canada as a skilled worker will be assessed against a point system consisting of six selection factors: education level, work experience, English/French proficiency, age, job offer and adaptability.
New federal skilled worker applications that do not meet the eligibility criteria will not be processed. The guidelines for high-demand skilled occupations are very precise, and we recommend checking the CIC website to determine if your occupation is listed.
